Summary
Welcome to the course “Applied Public Health Research”! This is a 25-month tutored course designed for people who are engaged in applied public health research at an operational level. It caters for staff working in National Public Health Institutes, Ministries of Health (whether at the health facility, district, or national level), Universities, local NGOs or Charities, and local private contractors.
In this course you will learn about all aspects of the public health research cycle, from developing a good public health research question to disseminating the results of your research. Our aim is to help you develop / perfect competencies that you can either incorporate into your daily work (for example, research projects that you are already involved in) or use to undertake public health research projects in your own local contexts.
The course consists of in-person and online modules which alternate in time. In order to put into practice the concepts that are taught in each the different modules, you will work on a research project yourself throughout the course.
The course “Applied Public Health Research” is part of a broader project called “Capacity Building in Applied Public Health Research in Global Health Protection Programme partner countries” (CARe). CARe is part of the Global Health Protection Programme (GHPP), a programme funded by the German Federal Ministry of Health, with projects being implemented in partner institutions across 38 Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

People working in public health from National Health Institutes and/or Ministries of Health, Health Facilities, Universities, local NGOs or Charities, and local private contractors in African countries.
What will you learn?
The overall objectives of this course are:
- To develop a research question tailored to the local context.
- To gain a solid understanding of common research methods and study designs in applied public health research to enhance knowledge and skills.
- To develop the ability to select the most appropriate study design and research method to address specific research questions in a feasible and relevant way.
- To acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively select or develop data collection instruments for specific research questions within a specified timeframe.
- To develop/perfect skills in data collection techniques within given time constraints.
- To develop/perfect the ability to analyse research data in a specific and timely manner.
- To master the knowledge and skills required to effectively disseminate research findings in a relevant and achievable manner.
Structure of the course
The course spans a total of 25 months and it is divided into six modules. Three of these modules are in-person (modules 1, 3 and 5, taught respectively in 2023, 2024 and 2025) and three of the modules are online (modules 2, 4, and 6). Each of the online modules consists of five or six sessions. Each session of each online module is planned over a period of about a month and it includes a 1.5-hour live online session, followed by two hours of self-directed learning. Additionally, participants are offered monthly webinars, delving into different topics related to Applied Public Health Research.
Throughout the course, you work on your own research project. This can be 1) a project that you develop and put into practice on your own or 2) a case study that we have prepared for you. If you choose to work on a case study, we give you the choice of working on either a quantitative or on a qualitative research study. The course is designed to guide you through all the steps of your research project, from developing a good research question to doing a literature review, developing a study design, collecting (where relevant) data, cleaning and analysing data, and writing up the main elements of the project (Background, Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion) in a paper about your research project. There will be periodic (typically once every two months) one-on-one sessions with one of the tutors to follow up on your project.
How much time do you need to invest?
Apart from the in-person workshops, which last either one or two weeks, during each session of the online modules you will be offered a 1.5-hour live session, a Webinar and some relevant reading material which should take about two hours of your time to go through. However, by far the biggest time investment that you should make is on your research project. Feel free to discuss this and other points on the one-on-one sessions that you have periodically with your tutors.

Summary
Welcome to the course “Applied Public Health Research”! This is a 25-month tutored course designed for people who are engaged in applied public health research at an operational level. It caters for staff working in National Public Health Institutes, Ministries of Health (whether at the health facility, district, or national level), Universities, local NGOs or Charities, and local private contractors.
In this course you will learn about all aspects of the public health research cycle, from developing a good public health research question to disseminating the results of your research. Our aim is to help you develop / perfect competencies that you can either incorporate into your daily work (for example, research projects that you are already involved in) or use to undertake public health research projects in your own local contexts.
The course consists of in-person and online modules which alternate in time. In order to put into practice the concepts that are taught in each the different modules, you will work on a research project yourself throughout the course.
The course “Applied Public Health Research” is part of a broader project called “Capacity Building in Applied Public Health Research in Global Health Protection Programme partner countries” (CARe). CARe is part of the Global Health Protection Programme (GHPP), a programme funded by the German Federal Ministry of Health, with projects being implemented in partner institutions across 38 Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

People working in public health from National Health Institutes and/or Ministries of Health, Health Facilities, Universities, local NGOs or Charities, and local private contractors in African countries.
What will you learn?
The overall objectives of this course are:
- To develop a research question tailored to the local context.
- To gain a solid understanding of common research methods and study designs in applied public health research to enhance knowledge and skills.
- To develop the ability to select the most appropriate study design and research method to address specific research questions in a feasible and relevant way.
- To acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively select or develop data collection instruments for specific research questions within a specified timeframe.
- To develop/perfect skills in data collection techniques within given time constraints.
- To develop/perfect the ability to analyse research data in a specific and timely manner.
- To master the knowledge and skills required to effectively disseminate research findings in a relevant and achievable manner.
Structure of the course
The course spans a total of 25 months and it is divided into six modules. Three of these modules are in-person (modules 1, 3 and 5, taught respectively in 2023, 2024 and 2025) and three of the modules are online (modules 2, 4, and 6). Each of the online modules consists of five or six sessions. Each session of each online module is planned over a period of about a month and it includes a 1.5-hour live online session, followed by two hours of self-directed learning. Additionally, participants are offered monthly webinars, delving into different topics related to Applied Public Health Research.
Throughout the course, you work on your own research project. This can be 1) a project that you develop and put into practice on your own or 2) a case study that we have prepared for you. If you choose to work on a case study, we give you the choice of working on either a quantitative or on a qualitative research study. The course is designed to guide you through all the steps of your research project, from developing a good research question to doing a literature review, developing a study design, collecting (where relevant) data, cleaning and analysing data, and writing up the main elements of the project (Background, Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion) in a paper about your research project. There will be periodic (typically once every two months) one-on-one sessions with one of the tutors to follow up on your project.
How much time do you need to invest?
Apart from the in-person workshops, which last either one or two weeks, during each session of the online modules you will be offered a 1.5-hour live session, a Webinar and some relevant reading material which should take about two hours of your time to go through. However, by far the biggest time investment that you should make is on your research project. Feel free to discuss this and other points on the one-on-one sessions that you have periodically with your tutors.
